Background

Since the 20th century, the rate of soil degradation has increased rapidly, exacerbated by the intensifying effects of climate change. Soil degradation is now increasing exponentially, posing a significant challenge to global sustainability. The rising global temperatures have reached a critical point where urgent action is imperative. A vital solution to mitigating this impending disaster lies in the soil. Fertile soil supports thriving plant life, produce food to sustain populations, and also contributes to the expansion of green areas, facilitating carbon storage and aiding in the planet's cooling process.

As the first World Soil Day was held in 2014, public awareness has significantly increased regarding the critical importance of soil health to the environment, agriculture, and overall human well-being.

In Thailand, concerted efforts by all parties have been made to raise awareness about the value of soil resources and the necessity of their sustainable use, improvement, and conservation. These initiatives aim to ensure the efficient and sustainable use of soil resources, establish soil as a secure food source, reduce hunger and malnutrition, mitigate the effects of climate change, alleviate poverty, and promote sustainable development.

This initiative has fostered collaboration and network coordination across seven key sectors of society, including the government, private, education, religious, civil society, agricultural, and public sectors. Together, these sectors facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences in soil management, development, improvement, and problem-solving across various disciplines. This collective effort aims to drive towards the realization of a more equitable society at all levels, creating stability, food security, and benefits for both the country and the global community.

“We have to make people good first. When people are good, the water is good, the soil is good, the world will be good, the food will be good, the mountains will be good, the rice fields will be good, the sea will be good, and the food will be good because of the sea, rice fields, mountains, food production areas. Which creates 5 good things: good people, good soil, good water, good world, good food and medicine, coming back to good humans. All of this will definitely help stop the catastrophe of the world or stop the world from boiling over.”

To make the soil good, You have to start by making people good first. You must reduce your desires and not take advantage of others. We must see the common benefits. and must have knowledge and must keep up with the world because the world changes rapidly When creating a good person Good people create unity and cooperation. and solve the problem of soil deterioration When the soil is good, it will hold water well. Plants will grow well and the earth will be healthy too.”

Professor Yak has stated: One way to practice "sufficiency" is to cultivate "sacrifice," prioritizing the common good over personal gain.

Spirit of Partnership

In 2022, the collaboration of seven network partners, including both public and private sectors, along with the Soil and Fertilizer Society of Thailand (SFST), coordinated the World Soil Day campaign titled “Spirit of Soil, Spirit of Partnership,” which highlighted the critical role of soils in food production. The campaign involved over 500 events, reaching more than 150,000 people in person and over 11 million individuals through media channels.
